This is one of our first choices when it comes to vegitarian foods we love the brand and products.

5 out of 5 stars A faithful redi-burger user   January 28, 2009

I have used redi-burger for at least 25 years now, and I agree with Mary of Carrollton, TX, who remembers the product more favorably in years past. The product isn't as good as it used to be, but it is still the one I prefer over many other meat analogs. I was born into a vegetarian home and have never had meat, so I have really acquired a taste for these types of products. My children eat meat, but because of my background, they have been exposed to redi-burger and eat it quite well. When their friends visit, I don't serve this unless I have used it in a vegetarian lasagna recipe that absolutely everyone I have ever served it to likes. As a substitute for a hamburger, redi-burger is just too foreign, I think.

As far as ordering this product through Amazon, I found it to be a great deal! I haven't found anywhere else that offers a better price. Of course, that was because of a special that ran during December. I don't know how the normal price compares with those in a health food store.

If you take these carefully from the can by opening both ends and sliding the product from the can onto a dish and slicing in 1/2 inch slices and brown--delicious.

This is a great healthy cruelty free alternative to hamburger. It's easy to prepare. I make hamburger gravy, meatloaf, meatballs and add it to any ground beef recipe. I simply add some oil to a skillet heat the redi-burger and smash it up with a potato masher for a ground beef texture.

4 out of 5 stars Redi-Burger - yes, it's an acquired taste   September 9, 2008

In response to the reviewer who wrote that this product "tastes burned right out of the can, and has a sandy/gritty or mealy texture", that does not sound normal. I've been eating this product for at least 35 years, off and on, and it is never normal for it to feel gritty or sandy. I would return any can that had that texture. This burger does have a finer texture, though, compared to that of Loma Linda Vegeburger or Worthington Vegetarian Burger.

This product has a strong flavor of its own and, in my experience, doesn't do particularly well as an ingredient but stands alone much better. I agree with those reviewers who said to open both ends of the can, push the product out, and slice it off fairly thinly. (I usually chill the can thoroughly before opening it so the slices hold together better.) I fry the slices in a little olive oil or butter until they're crispy on each side, then use them for sandwiches. I like them pretty plain on a multi-grain bread, with mayo and onion, but that's just my own preference.

I admit that this is not my favorite vegetarian burger but, every now and then, it satisfies a craving when nothing else will.
